5 things to Remember this December

By Amy Crawford

OMG, its December. How did this even happen.

Exhausted? Relieved? Overwhelmed? Getting that pulled-in-every-direction feeling so many of us have at this time of year?

Well, I say let’s all take a collective deep breath - and commit to doing December a little differently, yes?

Here are 5 Things To Remember this December.

1. You are NOT the centrepiece.

The responsibility of Christmas and the joy thereof, does not rest solely on your shoulders. You are NOT in charge of other people (and their happiness), you are only in charge of you (phew, now you can relax).

2. It doesn’t have to be a rush.

If you do need to shop, cook and prep, put it on the schedule. No shopping on the run or cooking at the last minute. Give yourself plenty of time to get things done by blocking out time on your schedule. And breathe.

3. Everyone wants a job.

Yes, people really do want to help out at this time of year. Give everyone in your family a job to do from making desserts, planning activities, driving elderly relatives to events, pet minding, packing up... delegate folks, delegate!

4. It’s not for everyone.

Wait - WHAT?! Christmas isn’t for everyone? Well, think about it: Socialising (if you’re an introvert), overwhelming obligations, facing family rifts, overspending, over-indulging, breaking routine, rushing, crowds . . . Give yourself permission to NOT love everything about this time of year. For some people the festive season makes them feel more alone and isolated than ever. Just be sure, it will pass.

And also, be sensitive to others who may find it more challenging than you.

5. You made it.

Yep, you got through 2020. Take a moment to acknowledge ALL your achievements this December – big and small. Congratulate yourself for getting through this year and becoming more resilient along the way. Because far out, I think every single one of us deserves a pat, or 15, don't you?

Now, I want to hear what December looks like for you – and how you’ll do it differently. Comment below I’d love to hear from you!
