Why your skin feels different right now - image of woman sitting on front porch with collagen

There are times when your skin simply doesn’t feel like your own.

It might be a little drier than usual, a little flatter in tone, or just not responding the way it once did. Makeup that used to glide on now sits differently, and the products you’ve always relied on don’t seem to have quite the same effect. It can feel subtle at first, and then one day you realise something has shifted.

Often, it isn’t just one thing.

As we move through our 40s and 50s, natural hormonal changes begin to influence how our skin behaves. The skin can hold less moisture, its ability to repair slows a little, and that plump, resilient feeling we once took for granted can start to soften. Add to that the change in seasons, cooler air, indoor heating, less hydration, and the general pace of life, and it makes sense that skin can begin to feel a little depleted.

It’s not that your skin is suddenly difficult, it’s simply asking for a different kind of care.

For a long time, many of us have been taught to do more when something feels “off.” Add another serum, try a stronger active, change everything at once. But in my experience, and especially at this stage of life, the answer is rarely found in doing more. It’s found in doing the right things, consistently, and creating a routine that supports rather than overwhelms (you and your skin).

When my skin feels like it needs a reset, I come back to a very simple routine. It’s gentle, it’s effective, and it’s something I can maintain even on the days when I’m tired or short on time.

It begins with a gentle cleanser that removes the day without leaving the skin feeling tight - this makes all the difference. From there, I like to add hydration back in immediately with a light spritz or toning mist. This can seem like a small step, but it really helps to soften the skin and open the pores to receive what comes next.

A good serum follows, something that supports repair and nourishment without feeling heavy. This is where I focus on ingredients that help the skin feel more supported rather than corrected. And then, I seal everything in with a cream that feels comforting and protective, especially as the weather cools and the air becomes drier.

Most evenings I add an eye cream, and a couple of times a week I take a little more time with a mask, but the foundation of my routine remains the same. Cleanse, hydrate, treat, and seal. It’s simple, but it works for me and my routine.

clemence organics skin care products on plate

Over the past few months, I’ve been using the Clémence Organics range in this exact way, and what I’ve appreciated most is how calm and supported my skin has felt. It hasn’t been about big changes or quick fixes, but rather a return to balance. The products are gentle, thoughtfully formulated, and feel aligned with the kind of care I want to give my skin at this stage of life.

What I have come to value more than anything is consistency. Not perfection or a complicated routine, but showing up for my skin in a way that feels manageable. Because when you do that, your skin responds - it softens and settles, and begins to feel like yours again.

There is also something worth remembering here. The kind of care we so naturally offer to others, especially at this time of year, is often the very thing we forget to extend to ourselves. Taking a few minutes in the morning or evening to care for your skin can become less about appearance and more about how you feel. It’s a small act, but it has a way of bringing you back to yourself.

Your skin doesn’t need perfection and it doesn’t need you to chase a younger version of it. It simply needs support, nourishment, and a routine that meets it where it is right now.
