I'm going to point to some scientific theory to kick off this post - in an effort to hold on to a few skeptics before I lose you at the title (and I should add that that would  have been me 12 months ago).

It is scientifically proven that trees have a positive effect on our health - they have proven to have aided in alleviating headaches, depression, ADHD and concentration levels. Children have shown physiological and psychological changes when interacting with plants. It is widely accepted that interacting with nature can significantly improve our mental health and overall wellbeing.  For more information take a look at Blinded By Science, a recently published book by Matthew Silverstone.

So what is it about trees? Basically it comes back to the principle that every living thing vibrates and different vibrations affect biological behaviours.  According to Erica Sofrina, Internationally recognised Green Living Columnist (amongst other accolades) "Plants and trees facilitate the cleansing and revitalizing of all of the stored up negativity and stress humans experience and give it a place to be absorbed. Being in their presence  realigns our vibrations to be more in alignment with their healing and grounding vibrations."  When we sit near or within reach of a tree we come into contact with their life enhancing energy that improves our overall wellbeing.

I had an amazing experience with this when undertaking my Reiki 2 training. I was fortunate to receive healing from 3 Reiki Masters at once (and a very powerful healing session it was) - it's effects were intense. I had a life changing experience on this table that left me 'reeling' to some degree and it was clear that I needed 'grounding' and rebalancing. Joanne, my Reiki Master suggested I walk outside in bare feet, find a tree and wrap my arms around it. I can't tell you the calming feeling that flowed through my body. It felt nurturing, grounding and so very calming.

Take note of those times that you are feeling disconnected, 'out of whack' or off balance. Go for a walk in nature or out to your back yard (if you are fortunate enough to have trees). Intrinsically chose a tree that feels right for you. Wrap your body and arms around the tree (I love to look up through the leaves to the sky), shut your eyes, take some deep breaths and immerse yourself in it's life force, for 5 mins or 30, every day if you can. Believe in their magic and feel the difference.

You don't have to be a hippie to hug a tree.
