How letting go transformed my life.
By Amy Crawford
The birthdate of The Holistic Ingredient isn't a date that sticks in my head. In fact, it wasn't until 3pm on 31st October that I realised it was our fourth birthday. With a to-do list as long as my arm I contemplated ignoring it altogether (as only an A type might), but something made me stop. There was a voice in my head telling me that milestones such as this should be celebrated, or at the least, marked with a period of reflection.
So reflect I did.
My period of contemplation got me thinking about words that I could share with others contemplating change in their lives, and here they are.
Just 4 years ago, I was recovering from several years of chronic illness; I'd walked away from 18 years in the recruitment industry and sat down to write the first of what was to become one of many hundreds of blog posts.
I was 40 years old. I had no job, I had no income and I had NO IDEA what I was going to do with my life. All I knew was that somehow I needed to share what I had learnt during my recovery to empower and educate others. I knew that I loved to write; I knew that I had developed a passion for whole foods; I knew I loved to photograph the food that I was eating (thank you Instagram!); I knew that the changes I had made in my life combined were responsible for my return to good health and far greater happiness.
I understood that these health challenges had come into my life for a reason, and I needed to make those challenges count.
Which takes me onto the real point of today's post. The bit that I hope will inspire you to bring about positive change in YOUR life, if it's change you need.
What I did have on my side that day was a willingness to let go of the need to know how everything was going to work out and a simple belief that if I put one foot in front of the other in a direction that FELT right, the universe would take care of the rest.
The day of my diagnosis and the many months that followed taught me that I could no longer control everything that happened in my life. As frustrating as that realisation felt at the time - as I tried to force my body into a better state of wellness (until incurring the wrath of my Doctor) - soon enough, letting go of control became a welcome relief.
Since then my work has evolved in many different and fascinating directions; it's been challenging, confronting, exhilarating, stimulating, inspiring, joyful and at times REALLY bloody hard (so hard I almost unplugged the lot and moved to a tiny island), but you know what?
The bigger the challenge the bigger the transformation. Discomfort is happening for a reason - so we need to learn to embrace it, take action and to then reap the rewards that follow.
If you are pondering significant change in your life or perhaps also to a career of passion, NEVER let age deter you. Age is a number, and in my view it's simply an excuse we choose to use.
If you are fearful, if you feel stuck, if you don't feel good enough, know this: YOU are the only person standing in your way. You are 150% responsible for everything that happens in your life. Not your employer, not your partner, the economy, your friends or the weather. It's YOU. Only you can make a different choice and choose a different path. You can choose to eat different foods, you can choose different friendships, you can choose a different partner, to spend more time with people who inspire and uplift you instead of pulling you down.
YOU have it all within you.
So, if you are contemplating change, here is today's pertinent message.
Simply start by changing the way you look at things. If you are feeling immense discomfort in one or many areas of your life - it is happening for a reason, and that discomfort is talking to you, it's trying to tell you that you need to make a different, more empowered choice. A choice that only YOU can make.
So today do this, take one step forward, just one, and tomorrow another. Change one thing and every single thing changes.
